A.P. McCoy - The Greatest National Hunt Jump Jockey Ever?

A.P. McCoy (Tony McCoy):
Anthony Peter McCoy, MBE born 4th May 1974, Moneyglass, County Antrim, Northern Ireland and more commonly known as A.P, Tony McCoy or A.P. McCoy is probably the finest jump jockey of all time.

A man dedicated to riding winners and with an iron will. A Jockey that never knows when he is beaten. Rode his first winner, Legal Steps at Thurles on the 26th March 1992 at the age of seventeen. He began riding in England in 1994. He rode a record 74 winners in that first season (1994/5) and won the conditional jockey's title. The following season he was champion jockey. The fastest jockey to reach 1000 winners, he rode his 3000th this year at Plumpton on Restless D'Artaix. He holds the record number of winners in a season which is 289. He has won most of the big races except for the Grand National. He worked with the trainer David Pipe where the two of them turned out winner after winner. The Pipe, A.P.McCoy team was invincible.

A.P. McCoy is now the retained jockey for the famous Millionaire Gambler and Horse owner J.P. McManus. There is little left for him to achieve. If you wanted a rider to ride for your life then A.P would be the man. He wins on horses he has no right to. Brilliant, talented, driven, a winner!

I used to have racing syndicate ownership of a horse called Prize Fighter, trained by Jonjo O'Neil and ridden for us by A.P. McCoy. Prize Fighter raced against some of the best novice of his generation, horses including Turko, Detroit City and Afsoun and wasnt disgraced. However, our horse was never really in love with the game and although he showed plenty on the gallops he was a 'morning glory' at the track. It was a privilege to enter the ring and have Tony ride the horse for us. A memory i will always treasure.

This year at the Cheltenham Festival A.P. rode Witchita Lineman to victory in the William Hill Trophy. As usual i was in an Irish Pub in Croydon watching with a number of friends (something i do every year if i am not at the track). One of my mates said that if Witchita Lineman won he would streak accross the road outside! The horse was never in the race, but McCoy kept on cadjoeling him, pushing him, persuading him to keep going and after the last the horse got up to win on the line! Thankfully for all concerned, my friend declined to carry out his threat!
