Antepost Betting - Value Bets For Future Events

Antepost Betting is an important tool in the Armoury of a professional Bettor. Often we will see a race or game or be aware of some information that can be used to to get some value odds about a situation some way off in the future.

A small bet can bring big rewards and if the odds tumble. At some point you can lay the bet off and have a 'free ride' on the outcome.

Three years ago i was at a stable visit at Peter Chapple-Hyam's where Peter was sweet on a young horse called Authorised. A couple of months later we heard that Peter thought that this horse could develop into a serious candidate for the Derby. I backed Authorised with a smallish bet of £30 E/W at 33/1. A couple of weeks later Authorised was 25/1 for the Racing Post Trophy. My thinking was that if Authorised was going to be a serious Derby contender then he would have to put up a decent showing in this race so I had £25 E/W at 25/1. The rest is history Authorised romped home in the RP Trophy was cut for the Derby. He ended up even money favourite and landed Frankie Dettori his first victory at Epsom!

I later found out that a friend of mine, who had been at the PCH stable visit, had a quiet word with PCH and backed Authorised at 80/1, 50/1, 40/1 and 33/1 for the Derby. When his odds tumbled he layed the bet off so that he had a position where if the horse won he made £36,000 and if the horse was beaten he made £9000. Quite some bet!

The point is that by taking outAntepost positions we can sometimes create Abitrage situations and be on a winner whatever the outcome!

During the National Hunt rcaing season I normally back a number of horses antepost for the Cheltenham Festival especially after meetings such as the November Paddy Power meeting at Cheltenham. Last season I backed Imperial Commander, Tatenen and Kauto Star before March.

From a football perspective it can be advantageous to bet on the winner of a division before the season starts. For example, if you were to bet on the top four in the Premiership(Manchester Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal) then at some point during the season you could lay off your bets as each club's odds usually tighten and weaken at different points in the season!
