Ruby Walsh - Profile Of A Master National Hunt Jump Jockey
Ruby Walsh is the reigning Irish National Hunt Champion Jockey.
Ruby is Irish, 5ft 10in tall and weighs 10 stone. Born 14th May 1979 in Kill, County Kildare, Ireland. He is the son of trainer and former Champion ameteur Jockey, Ted Walsh.
Ruby won the Irish ameteur title twice in 1996/7 and 1997/8 before turning professional. He won the Grand National at his first attempt on Papillon in 2000. To date he has rode over 1400 winners.
After this years Cheltenham Festival (where he rode a record 7 winners) he has taken his total festival Winners to 24, more than any other Jockey currently riding. He is only one behind all-time leader Pat Taaffe who has 25.
Ruby has broken his leg twice and in November last year, at the Paddy Power meeting, he had a terrible fall which resulted in him having to have his spleen removed! Tough as teak these jump jockey's!
Ruby rides for Paul Nicholls (the current champion trainer in Great Britain) and Willie Mullins in Ireland. He is sought
after to ride by all the best trainers. A typical Walsh ride will see the horse saunter around the back until the final
circuit where a gradual improvement will see the horse appear at the business end of the race to gallop clear of his rivals.
Ruby Walsh on top form is a glorious sight for any NH racing enthusiast. Truely a master of his craft.
Three years ago i started to go racing in Ireland and when you are not sure of form and want a sporting tenner on something
for an interest in a race, Ruby Walsh is the man to follow. He always seems to have a number of winners at any festival but especially at Listowel where for the last three years i have followed him religiously. He has certainly helped keep the wolf from the door!
Roll Of Honour:
Aintree - Grand National 2000 and 2005 (Papillon and Hedgehunter)
Kempton - King George 2006, 2007 and 2008 (all on Kauto Star)
