The Tote - Bet With A Different Type Of Bookmaker

Whenever we go Racing to British Racecourses there is an alternative bookmaker in the shape of the Tote. Where a normal bookmaker will lay odds on each horse in a race, the Tote works as pool of all bets placed on that race, a levy is creamed off the pool which is their profit and your return is determined by the number of winning tickets. It is now possible to bet with the tote through the internet and a number of shops accross the country.

The advantage of betting this way is that you can get better prices as well as betting place only whereas with a normal bookie you have to back each way to get place odds. The only other way that you can bet with place odds only is with a betting exchange such as Betfair.

The disadvantage is that you never know what price the horse will return at until after the off, as all the bets have to be in before the price is determined and things can change very quickly just before the 'Off'.

You also have the opportunity to back on the jackpot (The first 6 winners on the card) or the Placepot (the first 6 races on the card with your selection finishing in the places for that race) Remember that the number of places for each race will be determined by the number of runners in that race.

The jackpot and Placepot are bets that can be 'permed' to give yourself more chance of winning. When i go racing i like to do the placepot in a perm of something like (1x1x1x2x2x2) for eight bets of £1 and a cost of £8. I select three 'bankers' and three 'double' horses.
