Sir Henry Cecil is probably the best loved British Flat racing trainer. Born January 11th 1943 he is the step-son of former champion trainer Sir Cecil Boyd-Rochfort for whom he worked as an assistant from 1964 - 1968. Sir Henry took out his licence in 1969 and had his first winner with Celestial Cloud at Ripon on May 17th that year.
He is a master craftsman who is particularly adept training fillies. 10 times Champion Trainer, with 34 classic winners (8 Oaks winners to his name) he has had some of the cream of racing jockeys riding for him such as Piggott, Fallon and Eddery. He has trained at Warren Place, Newmarket since 1976.
This year he has listed the following as horses to follow from his yard:
Older horses:
Walking Talking, Ajaan, Jack Dawkins, Kandahar Run, Twice Over.
Three-year-olds:
Cloudy Start, Father Time, Native Ruler, On Our Way, Buckie Boy, Apple Charlotte, Bouvardia, Brief Look, Flame Of Gibraltar, Hisaronu, Honest Quality, Invincible Isle, Midday, My Chestnut Girl, Ramara, Samara Valley, Silk And Satin, Tomintoul Star, Rare Virtue.
Things to note about betting on Sir Henry Cecil runners are that inexperienced horses rarely win first time out as their first run is to educate the horse about its forthcoming career. The horses are nurtured so that they improve to reach the high targets that Sir Henry has. Never be surprised if the horse doesn't win for two or three races as the horse is gradually built to a peak. In my opinion any other trainer will find it difficult to get the same horse within 10lbs of the rating Sir Henry will get the horse to run to!
