Owning a Race Horse through a Racing Syndicate

Racing Syndicate ownership:

Race Horse ownership is largely for the rich or very well off. A horse can cost anything up to a million pounds plus. You then have the trainers costs which can be anything upwards of £30 a day, vet's bills, race entry, transport, jockey fees, silks etc. Your monthly outlay after the purchase of the horse is upwards of £1000.

So the only way you or i can 'own' a horse is through a club or Racing syndicate. There are varying degrees of syndication from 1/2,1/4,1/8th or 1/16th ownership etc up to something like Elite Racing where there are approx 15,000 members and is more of a 'club'.

Small racing syndicate ownerships will normally involve an initial outlay followed by a fixed monthly cost running into £100's of pounds depending on the number of owners. However, larger ownerships such as Diamond Racing can be run differently.

Diamond Racing:

I am an owner with Diamond Racing. Their approach is a little different. Firstly, you purchase a 1% share in a horse for a monthly fee ususally £99 (but they do have offers). There is only ever a maximum of 35 owners in that horse and the company retain 65% of the ownership. The syndicate will last for about two years but you can pull out at anytime with just 30 days notice. You get 1% of prize money and 1% sale value of the horse. When the horse runs you get an owners and trainers ticket if you want one, you can go in the parade ring and the winners enclosure if your horse wins!

The club runs a Racing Tips service which has been profitable every year without fail and they run trainer lines where your trainer's runners are discussed. Diamond Racing has been around for 15 years. I have been a member for nearly 4 years, made many friends and enjoyed many great days racing. when one of your horses wins the feeling is fantastic!

Elite Racing:

Elite Racing is more of a club and has a fixed yearly cost of about £180. You get consessions for entry into many racecourses, the opportunity to put your name down for a draw for owners badges, racing holidays abroad and a weekly magazine full of news about Elite, their horses, breading programs and general racing news. Good fun and well worth the membership.
