The Grand National - The runners, betting tips, race advice and how to place a bet
The Grand National:
The John Smith's Grand National is probably the most famous horse race in the world. Run at Aintree the fences have become as famous as the heroic horses and jockeys that take part. If there is one horse that a person knows then it is probably the legendry Red Rum who won the race three times and finished second on two further occasions.
People who would not normally bet, will have a flutter on the National following a name, or jockey, that takes their fancy or reminds them of something!
There are basically three ways to have a bet on the Grand National.
1. Walk into a betting shop, fill out a betting slip with the name of the race, your selection, the amount of the bet and type of bet such as win or eachway, then hand the slip over the counter and pay your money. If you require further assistance ask at the counter.
2. Phone a bookmakers call centre, open an account and place your bet with the telephone operative who will help you through all the necessary steps to complete your account and place a bet.
3. Open an internet account, deposit some money and place your bet. To do this click on any bookmaker advert on internet websites or google the bookmaker of your choice. Click on resister and open an account by filling in the questions on the form. deposit some cash (usually part of the enrollment process). Then place your bet by clicking on the race and name of horse you wish to bet on. This quite easy and obvious from the screens on the bookmaker website.
Tips to get the mopst from your bet:
1. Back your horse eachway as you get 1/4 the odds for up to five places (if you back a horse at 20/1 and it finishes forth you would get 5/1 for a place!).
2. Choose a bookmaker that gives you five places for your eachway bet. Normally you only get four places and the extra place gives you more of a chance of winning some money.
3. Back with a bookmaker that gives you best odds guaranteed. This means that if you back a horse at 16/1 and its starting price is 20/1 you get the better price. This is the advantage of backing online as most of the bookmakers offer this service but check before you have a bet. (Bet365 and Paddypower are very good for this although Williamhill and Ladbrokes are now doing this for internet customers).
4. Always take the best price. If you have a winner or placed horse then you win more money if you got the biggest price.
5. Look out for special offers. Some bookmakers will give you an incentive in the shape of a free bet if you open an account with them, but beware some may not offer this service on National day as they will be exceptionally busy.
Good Luck with your selections and i hope you win!
